Hypermobility

Hypermobility is the increased movement at a joint.

Hyper means ‘more’

Mobility means ‘movement’

Some joints might have more movement, 1 in 4 primary age children have hypermobility (APCP 2023).  It is not an illness or a disease, just the way someone is put together.  In most children it is a normal finding and does not cause them any problems.  As children get older they become less bendy.

The amount of hypermobility can vary.  In some children who are very hypermobile it can affect how old they are when they learn to crawl and walk.

Some children with hypermobility can have pain and other symptoms.  About 1 in 500 people with hypermobility are diagnosed with a Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD).
