ADL - Developmental Stages

Remember all children learn to dress at different rates, work on one stage before moving to the next.

 

Dressing

Age What can they do

 

12 months

 

 

Cooperates in dressing, socks, shoes

 

 

18-24 months

 

Removes coat, dress, pants.
2 years

Removes unfastened coat

Push down garment and find 2 arm holes

 

2 - 2 1/2 years

 

Puts on coat
2 1/2 years

Removes pull down garment

Tries to put on socks

Puts on coat / shirt

Unbuttons 1 large button

3 years

Puts on shoes (not always correct foot), t-shirt, socks (without heel)

Zips/unzips jacket (not shank)

Assistance to remove t-shirt

Buttons 1 button

3 1/2 years

Finds front of clothing (mostly)

Unzips separating shank

Puts on mittens

Buttons x3

4 years

Undress independently

Put shoe on correct foot

Removes pull over top

Buckles

Zipper shank

Socks with heel placement

Shoes independently

Knows back and front

 

6 years

 

Dress unsupervised
