ADL - ZIPS & BUTTONS

ZIPS

Here is an amazing video from our friends at Sheffield Children's Hospital about zips.

Initially, practice opening and closing zips on pencil cases and bags.

Practise fastening and unfastening the zips on clothing whilst not wearing them.

Backwards chaining method - This means you carry out most of the steps but leave the last step for your child to complete. When your child has mastered that step move on to the next step.

Adult fastens zip & zips half way – child pulls all the way up using the ‘pull tab’ (encourage holding the fabric around the zip with their other hand).

Adult attaches zip & zips 1” from the bottom – child completes as above.

Adult attaches zip – Child hold fabric at the base (next to the ‘bottom stop’) and pulls up, moving stabilising hand up as needed.

Adult holds ‘slider’ in place at the very bottom – child slots in ‘bottom stop’ & continues to pull up as above.

(Child practices pulling ‘slider’ down and holding in place as adult slots in ‘bottom stop’).

Child then holds ‘slider’ in place before slots i n ‘bottom stop’ and pulls up as above.
